Why are sparrows considered an urban pest?

Sparrows are the second worst urban bird pest after pigeons and are common throughout Toronto and the wider GTA.

One of the problems is that sparrows like to flock together and chatter noisily, particularly in the late afternoon towards sundown when you’ll see them gathering on roof edges, telephone and electricity cables and just about every available horizontal surface.

They are also non-migratory and, particularly in the winter months, like to set up home in and around warmer human structures that offer some protection from the worst of the weather. Several families may share the same spherical nesting site and, once they have established their home, will continue to raise two or three families each season. This means that by the end of the summer each breeding pair can have produced up to 20 living offspring – all of whom will stay close by to congregate with other extended family members. In time, after 2-3 years, this one breeding pair could have multiplied into 2,000+ sparrows.

Sparrow droppings are fertile breeding grounds for a variety of fungi, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other agents that can be noxious to human health.

In addition, sparrow urine is extremely acidic and will eat away at metal, wood and other materials, causing structural damage in the process.

The noise, damage and potential health threats that sparrows can cause are all good reasons to call in our expert urban pest exterminators at Sande Wildlife Control of Toronto so that you can keep your sparrow population down to manageable and non-destructive levels.

How we go about eliminating sparrows from your Toronto property

Before taking any action we will conduct a thorough inspection of your property to find out how and why sparrows are using your premises and where they are nesting.

We have found that successful sparrow elimination involves a variety of techniques which need to be implemented simultaneously for best results. These include:

  • With larger populations, setting up capture netting in your sparrows’ principle flight paths to catch and trap them as they fly into your property.
  • With smaller populations, setting up two-tier sparrow traps which are non-harmful and have a lower entrance into which the birds fly, and an upper layer where they remain until released far away from your home or office.
  • Hunting for and removing all nests and nesting material from all structures.
  • Covering nesting sites with ¾ inch wire mesh so that the sparrows cannot get back in to make new nests.
  • Covering other near-by gaps and crevices with ¾ inch wire mesh so that the sparrows don’t go on to make new nesting sites.
  • Electrifying the ledges on your house where sparrows like to congregate.

We will return regularly to monitor our anti-sparrow techniques and over time, and with a little patience, you will soon see a drastic reduction in numbers, if not complete elimination of all sparrows.
